The Art Department at Lafayette College seeks an artist well versed in the practice and teaching of contemporary painting for a tenure-track faculty position. We are interested in candidates with far-reaching approaches to painting and innovative models of teaching. We have a particular interest in creative practices and/or pedagogy that center on works and bodies of knowledge from historically underrepresented communities. Applicants should hold an MFA in Painting or
an equivalent related field by the commencement of the appointment, July 1, 2023, and have teaching experience at the undergraduate level and an active exhibition record.

The Art Department is a combined department with art history and studio art, which the College values as part of the core of a liberal arts experience. The teaching load for this position is four courses in the first year and five courses per year thereafter. Applicants should be prepared to teach every level of painting and drawing, including figurative painting, and will be expected to teach at least two introductory courses per year. The person who fills the position will be part of a dynamic department, whose faculty members rotate in their teaching of upper-level classes, including the studio capstone. Lafayette College is committed to providing students with personalized faculty-student experiences and, in turn, faculty have the opportunity to work oneon-one with students in the Honors program on semester- or year-long projects. This new faculty member will also have a voice in the evolution of the art curriculum over time. More information about the department is available at https://art.lafayette.edu/

The Art Department and the College value the importance of faculty research and development. Faculty members in the studio arts receive generous studio space and opportunities for a paid pre-tenure leave, post-tenure sabbatical, research funding, and other types of support. Lafayette faculty members can also participate in the College’s unique Excel Scholars program, which partners exceptional undergraduate students with faculty members in order to support collaborative research projects.

There are approximately 20 art majors per year in the Art Department. Many of them are double majors. Student projects are broad and often include research from a variety of sources and disciplines. The Art Department values critical discussions of race, gender, sexuality, emotional labor, and the social and cultural impact of making art in the twenty-first century.
